Angel Animals Story of the Week, 12-11-2010, "Journey's Goodbye"

Angel Animals Story of the Week
December 11, 2010
Visit us at www.angelanimals.net

Dear Friends of Angel Animals,

Welcome to the Angel Animals Story of the Week. We're always happy to connect with fellow animal lovers.

Laughing at Leaf in the Snow

Laughing at our cocker spaniel Leaf while he tries to run in snow that is higher than his little legs has been fun this weekend. As we write this, we're already up to 12 inches of soggy, white snow with more on the way!

Many studies of human-animal companionship show that people who have pets live longer, have lower blood pressure, are less lonely, and remain emotionally connected to the world around them. Petting an animal turns out to be one of nature's best stress-relievers.

One of our favorite ways to de-stress with pets is to laugh about the funny things they do. One of the main benefits we've received by sharing our home with animals is that they bring a smile to our faces every day.

In a world that seems to try and top itself each day with creative ways to add stress to life, animals with their honest playfulness and expressiveness, provide comic relief. When our dog and two cats roll over on their backs for tummy rubs or the bird spreads his wings as we compliment his beauty, our pets remind us to stop, notice, and smile.

Visit www.angelanimals.net/dogparkwisdom.html to see videos of how Leaf's adventures at the dog park allows us to relax with often a grin as he figures out how to achive his goals.

What do your pets do to make you laugh?

STORY OF THE WEEK

JOURNEY'S GOODBYE
By Maxine Clark

Our daughter and son-in-law had a black, fun-loving half Lab retriever and half mixed German short hair, Great Dane, and something else. Journey was big and free with his kisses. He went with them everywhere in their motor home. They loved him very much.

At the end of his life, Journey had illnesses that could not be cured and he was in misery. They had to put him to sleep.

They saved Journey's ashes until they went to the beach and then flung the ashes in the waves that Journey had loved so much.

On the way back to their motor home, in the wet sand, they saw large dog prints leading into the ocean.

Draw your own conclusions.

What have your experiences been with surrendering and accepting whatever outcome is truly best for the animal?

The Act of Surrender

The subject of how to know when an animal is ready to leave came up. As we talked with a distraught person who had to face that most painful decision, we told her something that we want to share with you.

We've noticed over these many years (since 1996) of hearing people's stories that there is an essential element to making the tough choices. It can be summed up in one word - surrender.

Surrender with its twin sister, trust, are undoubtedly the hardest things you'll ever do. This means accepting that you will know when it's time to let go of your beloved pet and that you'll do the right thing.

We mentioned to our friend that we'd seen the act of surrender have various outcomes.

For some people, when they truly released the situation to divine guidance, they had a peaceful knowingness that the animal needed to be released from a debilitated physical body. This usually was accompanied by some type of outer confirmation from the pet, the veterinarian, or from life.

Making the true and selfless act of surrender allows the animal to choose whether to stay or go. At times, the pet who seems about to die, instead, rallies and recovers. Perhaps because the animal has been holding on to life out of love for a human, this effort has taken energy away from his or her own recovery. Now the pet can focus on getting well.

In the case our friend's beloved pet decided to live. This has been a journey with a happy ending. But it did take her act of surrender. She had to say to her animal friend, "It's your choice. Don't stay only for me."

What have your experiences been with surrendering and accepting whatever outcome is truly best for the animal?

How have animals been generous with one another in remarkable ways?

ANGEL, OUR HERO HORSE
By Judy Moratis

In 2003, my husband and I started looking into raising miniature horses on our hobby farm. I remembered when I was in my 20s, I saw a tiny miniature horse at the Minnesota State Fair. I began reading about them. The more I read, the more interested I became. I looked on the internet, hoping to purchase a miniature horse but without any success.

It wasn't until the summer of 2004, while I was at work, that I found an ad for miniature horses. When I called, the man on the other end said, "Come take a look."

When the weekend arrived, my husband and I took a drive to look at the horses. To my husband's surprise the address belonged to his old friend, Wayne. Before I knew it the three of us were trudging through Wayne's swampy field to get to his herd of miniature horses.

There were so many of all sizes and colors. As we visited with Wayne and talked about the horses I told him that I didn't know how to pick from so many. Just after saying this, I felt a nudge on my back. I turned around to see a brown pinto mare. I told Wayne and my husband, "Well, guess she's saying 'pick me'." This horse broke the ice, and I was able to pick a few more minis. Yah know, you can't have just one.

We finished visiting and made arrangements for delivery. On the way home I told my husband, "The horse who nudged me on the back, her name is Angel." I don't know why, but the name just came to me.

When the horse registration papers came in the mail, I couldn't help noticing that Angel's birth date was the same as my youngest sister, Jackie. My sister had passed away unexpectedly. My mother passed away a year and half later. Life wasn't the same without them. In my grief of losing them, I had only memories. My sister loved all animals. After my she passed away, my mother began collecting angels.

I think back to that afternoon of being out in that pasture with all those horses, and Angel nudging me on the back. I believe the Lord was telling me my mother and sister's spirits were with me. And this horse has proven to me that she truly is an angel.

Angel saved a newborn foal in Spring 2009. One of my mares was a first-time mom who was having her foal early. She didn't have enough mother's milk, and her foal was getting weak. With only minutes to spare she needed more mother's milk. I was afraid we'd lose this filly.

I remembered that our veterinarian said, "A mare may let another foal nurse, but it rarely happens." I thought I'd see if Angel would let this newborn filly nurse on her. With Angel's own colt on one side and the filly on the other, it made for an awesome sight. The filly soon was standing strong and able to reunite with her mother.

Angel has given us beautiful foals. She has become our herd angel master over our other eleven horses. When we are outside Angel stands modestly in our pasture. She gives a soft, subtle whinny, telling us she is near, and everything is alright.

Helping Animal Welfare Organizations

We continue to look for ways of doing more to help animal rescue and animal welfare organizations. While we already donate a portion of all our proceeds to nonprofit charities, send baskets of books for silent auctions, and speak at fundraising events, we want to expand our outreach and support.

We're looking for corporate sponsors that want to reach the animal lovers who follow our work and read our books. Our goal is to find like-minded people in the corporate world who would get involved with us in helping nonprofit animal charities. If you have contacts in major corporations who might want to support Angel Animals in its charitable outreach goals, be sure to email us with your suggestions and ideas.
